Bariatric Support

Many bariatric patients and people living in larger bodies have been dismissed by healthcare providers, trainers, and coaches who don’t understand the full picture. We help you move with confidence through each phase of your journey, within a weight-inclusive, trauma-informed environment.

Long COVID, Chronic Illness, and Energy-Limitations

Dr. Thobaben has worked extensively with individuals navigating complex, often misunderstood conditions such as Long COVID, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), and POTS. Her approach respects your limits, helps you master pacing, and prioritizes symptom management.

Personalized Support, Delivered Virtually

We believe healing begins when your story is heard—and honored.

Dr. Thobaben is an expert clinician and educator in the specialties of bariatrics and chronic illness. She has over 10 years of experience caring for patients undergoing bariatric surgeries and treatment for eating disorders.

Since the emergence of Long COVID, she has been leading fellow clinicians and organizations to provide safe, trauma-informed rehabilitation through her teaching and research. The common thread across her work is her passion for serving patients who have been marginalized, shamed, and stigmatized in their healthcare journey.

ReStory was built to offer a different kind of care—one rooted in empathy, personal agency, and emotional safety. In a virtual setting, you’ll get focused, one-on-one support without the stress or barriers that can come with in-person care. Whether you're navigating chronic illness, post-surgical recovery, or simply trying to move more freely, your goals, preferences and voice shape everything we do.

FAQ's

  • What is trauma-informed physical therapy?

For people living with chronic illness or in a larger body, healthcare has often meant being dismissed, shamed, or pushed through pain and exertion without being heard. That history is real, and it shapes your sense of safety when it comes to movement and exercise.

At ReStory, care is built around you: your lived experience, your goals, and your pace. We start where you are, every time.

Trauma-informed PT acknowledges how past healthcare interactions shape the way people show up for care today. That means you have real agency in your movement and rehab — sessions where you feel heard, respected, and never pressured to push past your limits.

  • Is virtual physical therapy as effective as in-person visits?

For a lot of people, virtual PT isn't just effective , it's actually a better fit. Research supports telehealth for managing chronic conditions, post-operative care, and musculoskeletal pain.

If you have an energy-limiting condition, you won't spend what little you have getting dressed, driving to a clinic, and walking through a waiting room.

Telehealth removes the stress for those who have felt shame and embarrassment moving in front of others or in the gym setting. You arrive more at ease, and able to focus on what we're there to do together. Your own environment can be the most therapeutic space there is.

  • Do I need a doctor's referral for virtual PT?

In all 50 states, you can begin physical therapy without a physician or other health care professional referral. Wellness and coaching services do not require a referral.

  • Does ReStory accept insurance for telehealth services?

ReStory is an out-of-network provider. We provide superbills you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement based on your plan and deductible.

We also want to be upfront about cost and value. If you're on a high-deductible plan, the difference may be smaller than you expect — standard PT visits typically run $125–150 per session. While outpatient facilities often recommend 2-3 in-person visits per week, at ReStory, most patients begin with once a week and transition quickly to every 2-4 weeks.

Most insurance-based clinics utilize non-credentialed technicians to lead you through your session. At ReStory, your care will always be one-on-one with Dr. Thobaben, so that every minute of every session is valuable and impactful.
